Go BackFACCG Visit - 30th May 2010
A group of 19 volunteers from FACCG visited the reserve on Sunday 30th May 2010 to carry out a few items of maintenance including installing an interpretation shelter, fixing a bridge and starting to install a sluice gate where water can be diverted to the pond or to the river.

The weather was very dry and at times the sun was burning but that was good news when it came to digging holes for the shelter legs and the sluice gate.

The interpretation shelter was built several months ago as part of an advanced woodcraft course in Falkland completed by the group. It has now been situated at the entrance to the woodland and will in due course feature panels telling the story of the funghi found in the reserve... the panels having been kindly donated by Professor Roy Wattling.

A large sandstone and smaller stones were placed at either side of a footbridge to improve access across the stream and some maintenance was carried out on the bird hide to seal the biggest gaps and reduce the risk of birds becoming trapped inside as has been the case in the past.

Another major project was to build a sluice gate at the split in the stream where water can either reach the pond or the wetland/ river. Access of water to both is vital and a sluice gate can be used to prioritise the route the water takes.

Pipes have been laid at the pond inlet and silt has been removed. The pipe that directly supplies the pond has been lowered to lie level with the water table and to ensure a constant trickle of water to keep the pond active.

The gate still needs to be built and that will hopefully be installed on our next visit!
